Fixed term for one year with the view of long-term employment including three months probationary period.
This is a unique opportunity to join our small and dynamic team dedicated to producing and supplying top quality organic open-pollinated seeds to UK gardeners and growers. The main focus of this critical role will be order fulfilment as well as germination testing depending on the season. The job includes other tasks too.
Responsibilities (in order of estimated time split):
- Manage all aspects of order fulfilment (busiest periods are Jan-March, July-Aug, Nov-Dec)
- Quickly pick, pack and post orders
- Customer assistance including responding to emails, amending orders, processing, refunds and replacements
- Provide other customer/ office/ sales support including organising and monitoring office supplies, data entry, filing, sorting etc.
- Germination test seeds (busiest: May-Nov)
- Methodically fill seed packets (“packeting”) with precision and efficiency using scoops and seed counting machines
- Field work: weeding, planting, sowing, etc
- Processing seed crops
- Other duties as assigned to support production goals
Essential person specifications:
- Excellent customer service skills
- Effective written and oral communication skills
- IT skills – standard computer knowledge is necessary for this job (Windows, Gmail, Microsoft Office)
- Proficient ability to learn and adapt to new programs and software quickly
- Ability to work towards a deadline in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with an exceptionally high attention to detail while maintaining professional outcomes
- Understanding and/ or prior experience in seeds and organic food and farming
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Flexibility to respond to the needs of a small and seasonal business
- Ability to lift, carry and manoeuvre up to 20kg
- Communicates openly with team members, accepts feedback to improve efficiency and achieve high levels of quality and accuracy
Considerations
- This is a year round office position, not farm/ field work
- Position requires to be on your feet and standing for long periods of time
- This role may require you to work on your own at times
- Work may be done in close proximity to other employees with frequent background noises
- Position placement is in a remote, rural location. The work environment can be cold, dusty, muddy etc.
- You must have access to your own transport and be prepared to drive down single track lanes.
- Access to a shared kitchen for lunches as part of the Baddaford Collective
- In addition to hourly compensation, employees will be enrolled in a pension scheme and receive paid holiday time (20d/y + bank holidays, sick pay, employee discounts on seeds, and occasionally seeds, plants and produce)
- Formal job review after 3 months probationary period as well as informal check-ins after 6 and 9 months

We grow and sell open-pollinated vegetable, herb and flower seeds through our online shop to UK gardeners and small-scale growers. Onboarding process
Following your trial day and interview at Vital Seeds, you will receive feedback on whether you got the job or not. On your first day of employment, you will be required to complete the necessary paperwork, including an HMRC form and a new employee form. You may also need to present identification and, if applicable, proof of your right to work in the UK. Upon joining our team, you will receive your employment contract and other essential documents, including our Health and Safety procedures. We will also provide you with our grievance and disciplinary procedures documents, which outline the processes for addressing workplace concerns and maintaining professional standards. We will help you integrate smoothly into the Vital Seeds team and familiarise yourself with our organic seed production methods and company culture.
Evaluation and communication
When you first start work, you will naturally be exploring how you feel about working here and whether the work is right for you. We will be checking in with you informally at periodic intervals to see how it’s going and if you have any concerns. Before the conclusion of the probationary period we will schedule an evaluation to talk about the quality of your experience and if there are any issues we need to address. This evaluation will go both ways. There will be informal check-ins during your ongoing employment on a regular basis to keep track of job satisfaction and performance.
If, at any time, you feel you must terminate your position, we ask that you give four weeks notice (except in extreme circumstances of course). It is very important that we know if you are moving on. Our work does not wait for us to find employees, so we need all the lead time we can get.
Work environment
Vital Seeds is located 2 miles from Ashburton on a farm called Baddaford which is the home of the Baddaford Farm Partnership and the Baddaford Collective (https://www.baddaford.co.uk/). There are no housing accommodations available on the farm and there is no public transport there.
