Growing suggestions for pepper seeds

Sow pepper seeds indoors with heat from February, the ideal temperature is 20°C. If sown in a seed tray, prick out seedlings into 10cm pots once they germinate.  If grown in plugs, pot them on when they have two sets of true leaves. Transplant into final position in May, either under cover or in a sunny sheltered spot. Plants may need staking as they grow. The main shoot can be pinched out when the plants are 30cm tall to encourage side shoots, but this is not essential.

Crop History

Peppers were domesticated in Central and South America and brought to the rest of the world with the Spanish and Portuguese. Most of the peppers introduced to Europe didn’t come directly from the Americas but from India, Asia and Africa via Turkish trading routes.

A productive plant with a spread of about 60cm which is very suitable for British summers.     A popular sweet pointy pepper variety with delicious flesh and thin skin.

    The fruits have a long, pointed shape (hence the name “Bull’s horn” in Italy). They can be picked when green and will turn red when fully ripe. With a deliciously sweet flavour and a crisp texture, it’s ideal as a snack pepper or to cook with. Best to be enjoyed on the barbecue!

    Small sweet pepper variety from Tuscany traditionally used for pickling. An Italian pepper with the occasional hint of spice. Pepperoncini are often pickled in vinegar, made into delicious antipasti or cooked whole, served with classic Italian foods like pizza or pasta dishes.

    This variety belongs to the same family as bell peppers and hot tobasco chillies. Pepperoncini is an annual that favours hot, fairly dry summers. Normally harvested when glossy green, the pretty long wrinkly peppers turn red and exquisitely sweet if you leave them on the plant. Perfect for a little snack straight off the plant and a favourite when roasted or barbecued, served with olive oil and flakes of sea salt.
