Sweetcorn – Ashworth (Organic)

Short and stocky plants producing cobs of approximately 15cm length with beautiful yellow-golden kernels. This sweetcorn is the flavour of summer. It was developed by Fred Ashworth of St. Lawrence Nursery in New York. The legend is that he chose to develop the sweetcorn of those kernels from the bin that the rats preferred the most. He named it “Rat Selected” but it was renamed in his honour.

‘Ashworth’ was the earliest to crop in our sweetcorn trials in 2018 and it was exceptionally tasty.

When to sow: April – May

Spacing: 40 x 40cm

Sweetcorn tips: Sow indoors in pots or large modules from April. Sow two seeds in each pot and remove the less vigorous one. Plant out at final spacing after the last frost, mid-May as a rule of thumb.
Alternatively direct sow in May in final growing position; place 2-3 seeds in pre-dibbed 3cm deep holes at the required spacing and thin to one plant per station.
Early crops benefit from fleece to protect them from cold.
