Poppy – Hens and Chickens (Organic)

£2.20

An unusual poppy predominantly grown for its decorative seed heads. This ancient variety is named ‘Hens and Chickens’ due to the interesting formation of the seed head where the main head is surrounded by many tiny secondary seed heads, like a mother chicken surrounded by her gaggle of tiny chicks.

The blooms before the seed heads form are of a redish pink colour and are equally as attractive as the heads. The seeds can also be eaten, so this is a true multifunctional variety.

When to sow: Mar-Apr/Sept-Oct

Spacing: 20x20cm

Poppy tips: Sow directly, preferably in the autumn, where they are to grow. Just scatter the seeds by hand over the prepared soil or use shallow drills. Sow seeds thinly. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil or sand. Grow in any well-drained fertile soil in full sun. Poppies benefit from some space, so its good to thin them to 20cm between plants once they are established, but this is not essential.
