Crop History

Lettuce is said to have its bitter wild ancestors in the region of the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean. There is evidence that lettuces were grown in ancient Egypt more than 6,000 years ago; originally as an oilseed crop and the milky secretion as aphrodisiac. During the Roman era it was already eaten in a similar way to how we know it today: with salt, pepper, vinegar and oil.
