Turnips can be sown from February under protection, or in mid-March until May outdoors. Fleece or netting is recommended to protect from root fly. Maincrop turnip seeds can be sown from mid-July to late August. Turnips are fast growing with low nutrient requirements.

The crops within the species Brassica rapa include field mustard and turnip as well as Pak Choy, Tatsoi and other Oriental Greens. It existed in wild forms throughout Eurasia and has been part of the human diet for probably more than 10,000 years.
