Growing suggestions for broccoli seeds
Seedbed method: Sow broccoli seeds in drills 15cm apart, and thin 7cm between plants as they grow. Transplant the seedlings in June when they are 15-20cm tall. Modules: sow in modules and plant out to final position after 4-6 weeks. Plant up to the first leaves and firm-in well. Plants may need staking as they can grow up to 1m tall.
Broccoli is a member of the Brassica oleracaea family, which includes many other crops including cabbage, kohlrabi, cauliflower, and kale. Broccoli (plural of broccolo in Italian) means “flowering crest of a cabbage”, which is a very accurate description of what it is! There are two distinct types of broccoli, heading broccoli (also known known as calabrese) and sprouting broccoli. It has been cultivated for over 2000 years. It was bred in the northern Mediterranean region and was highly valued in the Roman Empire. It did not reach England until the mid-eighteenth century.
