    Carrot – Lila Lu (Organic)

Lila Lu is a purple carrot on the outside with a vibrant orange interior, sweet and crunchy. This is a modern European breed specifically developed for organic growing conditions. It has a crunchy texture and pleasantly sweet taste, the purple pigmentation is attributed to a higher levels of the potent antioxidant ‘anthocyanin’ alongside the usual beta carotene that orange carrots offer. Carrots have been bred since the 10th century in Asia, whilst we have come to know carrots in their orange standard, their ancestors were yellow and purple, we appear to have come full circle with this ‘new’ variety.

Chilli MIX – Hungarian Hot Wax with a hint of Basque (Organic)

Oops! A little mix-up happened here: a few Basque chilli seeds have sneaked into our Hungarian Hot Wax seed bag. Instead of chucking it all away, we decided to let them bring a bit of a surprise element to your garden. You’ll mostly get the classic, versatile Hungarian Hot Wax peppers – ripening from green over yellow and orange to red with a mild taste and perfect for pickling or grilling – plus a few Basque chilli plants with a spicy twist when eaten raw and quite mild when cooked; traditionally used in French cuisine for drying and powdering. Plant and see what you get!

    Pepper – Pepperoncini (Organic)

Small sweet pepper variety from Tuscany traditionally used for pickling. An Italian pepper with the occasional hint of spice. Pepperoncini are often pickled in vinegar, made into delicious antipasti or cooked whole, served with classic Italian foods like pizza or pasta dishes.

This variety belongs to the same family as bell peppers and hot tobasco chillies. Pepperoncini is an annual that favours hot, fairly dry summers. Normally harvested when glossy green, the pretty long wrinkly peppers turn red and exquisitely sweet if you leave them on the plant. Perfect for a little snack straight off the plant and a favourite when roasted or barbecued, served with olive oil and flakes of sea salt.

    Tomato – Sunfired Flare (Organic)

Medium sized beefsteak tomato with dark, almost black colours streaking down into orange and red. This productive indeterminate tomato variety was bred by fellow seed enthusiasts at Wild Mountain Seed in the US. The anthocyanins causing dark purple to black shoulders that stripe down into red and orange make them a real head turner.

They have a deep sweet and slightly acidic flavour. We have enjoyed them with our lunches simply with a bit of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt on toast, yet they make a great tomato sauce too.

    Chilli – Basque (Organic)

A superb early chilli with mild heat which is a cornerstone ingredient in Basque cuisine. If these seeds were produced in French Basque they would called “Piment d’Espellete”. This fantastic variety has P.O.D. status (Protected Designation of Origin) which means that the name can only be used where the variety is produced in the specific region where it is registered. Hence we are referring to this chilli as ‘Basque’ as the seeds were produced in Devon.

The plants are tall and produce an abundance of large conical, deep red fruits about 15 cm long and 3cm wide at the top.

When eaten raw they can be quite hot but once cooked they are very mild. The traditional use of these peppers in Basque is dried and powdered, but we have just eaten them like other chillies and totally love them.

    Cucumber – Shintokiwa (Organic)

This cucumber is amazing, a new favourite, prized for an outstanding sweet flavour, delicious juiciness and crisp, crunchy texture.

Known for its vigorous growth and productivity, this variety makes dark green long and slender fruits. They are mostly straight (when trellised) and uniform with an occasional curve. It is the flavour that is so extraordinary sweet, almost floral and so delicious throughout the season like no other cucumber we’ve tasted. A beautiful crunch and no bitterness even when harvested on the ripe side or towards the end of the season.

Shintokiwa is valued for its disease resistance, a fine choice for the greenhouse as well as outside.
