Herbaceous soft-prickly perennial plant highly valued in herbal medicine

A striking plant with traditional and current uses in herbal medicine for the heart (hence the species name cardiaca), and in women’s health.

Will grow 60 – 120 cm tall; blooms between July and September. You will find soft pale pink flowers surrounded by prickly spikes on their stems. Harvest the aerial parts when they start to flower. Prefers well drained soil, and sun or part shade.

Motherwort tips: To grow from seed, germination will be improved with cold stratification in the fridge for about a week. Keep moist and warm when sown, germination can take up to 6 weeks. Prick out seedlings and then plant out after last frosts. Self-seeds easily.
