    California Poppy (Organic)

A bright yellow/orange single flower of the Papaveracea (Poppy) family. It’s Latin name Escholzia Californica traces back to the physician Dr Johann Friedrich Eschscholz, who discovered and described the plant in 1815. Not only having its origins there, it also also became the state flower of California in 1890. It is quick to flower and will do so profusely for a long period of the summer until it sets seed. A real pleasure to have in the garden, especially in low-maintenance areas as it will just get on with doing its thing.

    Chard – White (Organic)

A classic variety with glossy dark green leaves and thick white stems. If you need a leafy vegetable that ‘just grows’ Swiss Chard is a garden essential. From two sowings, one in the Spring and one in the Autumn, you can have chard almost all year round. In Fred’s words “Chard is just always there, even if you don’t want it, it’s still there”.
This variety is robust, vigorous and very productive. You can use the stem and the leaf separately as they have different cooking qualities. Ronja’s favourite recipe is with the whole plant. Sauté onions in some oil with a bit of chilli and the Swiss chard, add some cooked white butter beans, serve with cheese on top – just delicious!

Madder (Organic) ***NEW FOR 2026*** (Copy)

Ancient perennial dye plant used to produce rich red pigments from its roots.

A beautiful dye plant, rubia tinctorum has been used for thousands of years, most famously responsible for the deep red of the British Redcoat uniforms. Its long, fleshy roots are packed with alizarin, the compound behind its distinctive colour.

Madder is a hardy perennial that grows to around 1m tall, with slender jointed stems and whorls of short, prickly leaves. In summer it produces small green-yellow, bell-shaped flowers, followed in late autumn by glossy black seeds that look remarkably like tiny peppercorns. It can be propagated from seed, or simply by dividing roots and shoots once established.

    Harvesting and dye use:
The roots take around 3–4 years to reach harvestable size for dyeing. For the best depth of red, madder prefers an alkaline soil.
