Ancient perennial dye plant used to produce rich red pigments from its roots.

A beautiful dye plant, rubia tinctorum has been used for thousands of years, most famously responsible for the deep red of the British Redcoat uniforms. Its long, fleshy roots are packed with alizarin, the compound behind its distinctive colour.

Madder is a hardy perennial that grows to around 1m tall, with slender jointed stems and whorls of short, prickly leaves. In summer it produces small green-yellow, bell-shaped flowers, followed in late autumn by glossy black seeds that look remarkably like tiny peppercorns. It can be propagated from seed, or simply by dividing roots and shoots once established.

    Harvesting and dye use:
The roots take around 3–4 years to reach harvestable size for dyeing. For the best depth of red, madder prefers an alkaline soil.

    Daikon Radish (Organic)

This is a great variety of Daikon radish, also known as Mooli, for sowing in July and August producing long bright white roots which are crunchy and delicious. Its roots can grow huge – up to 3 inches in diameter! It is not too hot and stays very sweet and crunchy. It’s best left in the ground until needed. We have some disagreement on the best way to eat daikons; Fred likes to eat it raw and Ronja’s favourite way is to eat it fermented or pickled. Try both and see what works best for you!

    Pepper – Pepperoncini (Organic)

Small sweet pepper variety from Tuscany traditionally used for pickling. An Italian pepper with the occasional hint of spice. Pepperoncini are often pickled in vinegar, made into delicious antipasti or cooked whole, served with classic Italian foods like pizza or pasta dishes.

This variety belongs to the same family as bell peppers and hot tobasco chillies. Pepperoncini is an annual that favours hot, fairly dry summers. Normally harvested when glossy green, the pretty long wrinkly peppers turn red and exquisitely sweet if you leave them on the plant. Perfect for a little snack straight off the plant and a favourite when roasted or barbecued, served with olive oil and flakes of sea salt.
