Luffa – Luffa aegyptiaca (Organic)
£2.65 Add to basketLuffa – Luffa aegyptiaca (Organic)
Annual climbing plant producing cucumber like fruits that can be made into a natural sponge. It’s part of the cucurbit family originating in India and produces 30 to 40 centimetres long fruits. Whilst the young fruits are actually edible, the mature ones can be boiled or dried to remove the flesh, revealing the sponge like fibres.
Germination can be tricky, needs hot temperatures constantly between 24 and 30°C and a long season to make a sponge.
The Luffas should be ready to harvest in October, once the skin of the fruits starts to wither. Harvest and stack them up somewhere warm, dry and airy, making sure to turn them. The skin should reach a point where it can easily peel off leaving the fibrous inner. Shake the seeds out and give a thorough wash to clean it. The luffa is likely to have natural brown markings on it; shop-bought luffas are bleached. (Approximate seed count – 15)

Dwarf French Beans – Brittany Haricot (Organic)
£2.95 Add to basketDwarf French Beans – Brittany Haricot (Organic)
Plump round bean with purple marbled pods best enjoyed half-dry . If this bean was grown in the Cotes d’Amor region of Brittany, it would be called Coco di Paimpol. With a creamy nutty flavour this Haricot bean is traditionally sold at French markets demi-sec in pods and enjoyed in hot and cold dishes.
We received a packet of seeds in the post from one of our customers with a note saying that they had been saving their own seed from this variety for over 6 years since they lived in Brittany.
Best harvested when the beans in the pods are fully formed and semi-ripe. It freezes really well, avoiding the need for
soaking overnight if dried. Great as a warm salad or in casseroles.

A beautiful and highly productive sweet pea producing an abundance of delicate cream blooms. This is Ronja’s favourite sweet pea of 2023, producing a huge amount of incredible blooms, the performance was incredible and beautiful in its simplicity. The scent of the flowers wafting through the field in July brought a very special feeling to the patch and we were sad to see the blooms go. Luckily they were followed by lots of plump seed pods which we were equally excited about as now we can offer this variety to you!

Daikon Radish (Organic)
£2.20 Add to basketDaikon Radish (Organic)
This is a great variety of Daikon radish, also known as Mooli, for sowing in July and August producing long bright white roots which are crunchy and delicious. Its roots can grow huge – up to 3 inches in diameter! It is not too hot and stays very sweet and crunchy. It’s best left in the ground until needed. We have some disagreement on the best way to eat daikons; Fred likes to eat it raw and Ronja’s favourite way is to eat it fermented or pickled. Try both and see what works best for you!

Lettuce – Ruffled Soul (Organic)
£2.00 Add to basketLettuce – Ruffled Soul (Organic)
Deep red, ruffled leaves, very suitable for repeated harvests. The most attractive lettuce I grew in 2018, it contrasts brilliantly with other leaves in a mixed salad. Bred by Frank Morton of Wild Garden Seed this lettuce is very suitable for repeated harvests since it is slow to bolt and the leaves do not get too big.

Cima di Rapa – San Marzano (Organic)
Price range: £2.10 through £3.00 Add to basket This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageCima di Rapa – San Marzano (Organic)
A really easy to grow broccoli alternative producing tender flowering shoots around 60 days from sowing. Cima Di Rapa (also known as broccoli raab), is actually botanically a type of turnip rather than a broccoli. As such it is very quick to grow and unfussy in terms of its water and nutrient requirements.
The flowering shoots are harvested like sprouting broccoli and if you take care not to remove the lower two leaves you can get a few cuts off them.
In Italy there are many different varieties of Cima Di Rapa, maturing at different times and with different culinary uses.

It does not grow a large central head, but produces side shoots – “fiois” – from its stem which are harvested and cooked with the leaves – not too dissimilar to Kalettes.
